– Bheri Ramsaran to be arraigned for threatening language
After months of anxiety, former Health Minister Dr. Bheri Ramsaran will head to court to answer a charge of threatening language.
The charge, which comes a day after his former ministerial colleague Dr. Jennifer Westford, was marched before a Magistrate, was advised by the Director of Public Prosecutions, who took one day to look at the file on the matter.
It stemmed from remarks made by Ramsaran to female activist Sherlina Nageer during an altercation outside the Whim Magistrate’s court.
The former Health Minister allegedly told Nageer that he could “slap her for the fun of it,” and have her stripped.
Nageer had filed the complaint three months ago and the police reportedly took their precious time to complete the investigation, which was delayed by the apparent reluctance of Ramsaran to give a statement.
In the interim, Ramsaran was forced to step down as Health Minister, following a wave of protests.
It was on April 20, last, that Dr. Ramsaran was recorded outside the Whim Magistrate’s Court telling Nageer to “F off”, and referring to her as a “little piece of s**t.” He was also recorded saying that he would have her “slapped for the fun of it,” and saying he could “have some of my women strip her.”
Dr. Ramsaran was Health Minister at the time and the activist had queried his presence outside the Whim Magistrate’s Court with other PPP supporters, after former President Bharrat Jagdeo was charged for allegedly making racially divisive statements at Babu Jaan, Corentyne.
Even after issuing an apology, Dr. Ramsaran was later recorded labeling Nageer as a “miscreant,” and saying that she was in need of “psychiatric help.”
He was roundly condemned for his statements and the outburst eventually led to former President Donald Ramotar relieving Dr. Ramsaran of his ministerial duties.
Many believe that Ramsaran would have gotten off scot free had it not been for a change of government.
He is expected to appear at the Whim Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga, the same Magistrate dealing with the case against former President Jagdeo.
