In response to heavy rains which resulted in flooding of the capital city and the coastal areas of the country earlier in the week, Minister within the Ministry of Communities, Keith Scott, and a team from the Central Housing and Planning Authority, (CHPA) and Guyana Water Incorporated, (GWI) last Friday, visited several flood affected residents in Lodge, Georgetown.
The effects of the two-day flooding were still evident when Minister Scott and his team visited the community. To ensure the health and safety of the flood-affected residents, the team distributed cleaning detergent, provided by M. Beepats & Sons Ltd.
While flooding is not a new scenario, residents were surprised with the amount of rainfall and how quickly the community flooded. They expressed optimism that Government will find a solution to the flooding situation.
Also in response to the situation, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, had announced that a National Emergency Operations Centre was activated in response to the situation.
Minister Harmon was part of the high-level team that included other Ministers of Government, representatives of various critical state agencies, the Red Cross and other organisations, at the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), Thomas lands, Georgetown.
Harmon had explained that a localized response utilizing all the national assets including experts and persons with specific skills and knowledge is being brought together to restore communities to normalcy in the shortest possible time.
The plan will concentrate on three essential areas, the disruption of life across the country; people who might be misplaced and persons whose properties and other assets have been damaged.
According to information posted on the Government Information Agency , (GINA) website, the Minister of State advised, “We want to say to the nation that the Government is very aware of what is taking place, we are taking steps on behalf of the people to ensure that people’s lives are not disrupted in a prolonged way. We will use all the resources available to the state to bring them to bear on this situation so that the people’s lives can go on as normal.”
The GINA report further outlined that Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, had said that all sluices, pumps and drainage canals are in working order. According to Patterson teams from the Public Infrastructure Ministry are at various locations to provide immediate emergency services if the need arises.
The Minister explained that the possibility of getting additional pumps from the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority is being considered.
Meanwhile, reports from local and international meteorology centres show predictions of more showers in the next 11 days.
