–will use the opportunity to present Guyana’s case on the ongoing territorial controversy in the Essequibo Region
After celebrating his 70th birthday yesterday, President David Granger was scheduled to leave today to attend the biannual Mercusor summit in Brasilia, Brazil. But it will not be a meeting to simply say, “Hello. It’s nice meeting you” among other pleasantries.
There, he is expected to speak on Venezuela’s claim to Guyana’s territory in the Essequibo region since the “significant oil find” by American oil giant, Exxon Mobil. Granger intends to make Guyana’s case clear on the matter to the various South American Heads of Government who will be attending.
This was disclosed by Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman, yesterday at the Ministry of Presidency during a post Cabinet press briefing.
Trotman reminded of the President’s return from his most recent trip to Ethiopia where he attended the Third International Conference on Financing for Development.
The Minister of Governance said that Granger will also introduce the new administration to the high level meeting of the Heads of Government, while taking the opportunity to address pending issues of sovereignty and development.
Trotman said that every regional and international visit made by the Head of State will be used to reinforce Government’s position on its territorial integrity and of course to garner support “because people believe that this is some old romantic notion Venezuela may have.”
Granger will be accompanied by the Foreign Affairs Minister, Carl Greenidge, and other officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mercusor is a sub-regional bloc comprising Argentina, Brazil, Guyana, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. Its associate countries are Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Observer countries are New Zealand and Mexico.
Its purpose is to promote free trade and the fluid movement of goods, people, and currency. It is now a full customs union and a trading bloc.
Mercusor and the Andean Community of Nations are customs unions that are components of a continuing process of South American integration connected to the Union of South American Nations.
