Minister of Governance within the Ministry of the Presidency with responsibility for Guyana’s natural resources Raphael Trotman has assured Guyanese living in the United States of America that the government will not lie down and allow Venezuela to bully the nation for its oil.
Speaking to thousands of Guyanese at a specially organised Victory Rally in Brooklyn yesterday, Trotman said that Guyana is on the threshold of greatness and the new coalition government will not allow the neighbouring Spanish speaking country to cheat it out of its God given resources.
And if one were to judge from the mouth of US Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Guyana can count on the support of the United States of America to ward off any unwanted Venezuelan overtures.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro recently issued a decree, creating the Atlantic Coast of Venezuela which now includes sovereignty over Guyana’s territorial waters in the Altlantic Ocean off the Essequibo Region.
The area now being claimed by Venezuela covers the location where a significant oil find was recently announced.
“Many of you would have read about Venezuela’s latest charade, games, claiming again that they are entitled to not just a part of Guyana …now they’re saying that (they’re entitled to) the sea where the wealth is that was recently discovered,” Trotman told the New York based Guyanese.
He described the find as one of the largest beyond anything they could imagine and he appealed to them to be patriotic and do whatever they can to assist their countrymen in Guyana to protect it.
“That is your wealth. Do not allow anyone to take it from you. It is ours and we are going to protect it,” Trotman said to thunderous applause from the close to 5000 persons who attended the rally.
“Let us demonstrate today from this Borough of Brooklyn all the way to Caracas, Venezuela, that there are Guyanese here by the thousands who will stand up for their country.”
Quoting from a speech delivered by Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Greenidge at the recent opening of the 11th Parliament, Trotman reminded that for too long the Venezuelan threat has been hanging over Guyana like the ‘Sword of Damocles’ and unless it is removed it will be the legacy that will be inherited by future generations of Guyanese.
He said that it is time to end this cycle; a definitive solution must be found, one that will put to rest Venezuela’s contention.
“The oil is ours, the land is ours, the mountains are ours the waters are ours the air is our and we will stand for it” Trotman stated.
And the people of Guyana can rest assured of the support on this matter from several influential political figures in the United States of America Congress.
This assurance came from US Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, who was one of the specially invited speakers at the event.
After outlining the role that he and other leading US politicians personally played in ensuring that Guyana conducted a free and fair election, Jeffries said that the work is not all done yet.
He said that he now has to make sure that he stands with the coalition government against all enemies both domestic and foreign.
He then pointed to the Venezuelan threat.
“I think I heard it right, ‘not a blade of grass, not a stitch of land, not an ounce of the Atlantic Ocean. We’re gonna stand with Guyana and protect its territorial integrity,” Congressman Jeffries shouted above the roaring crowd.
