Two teenagers from ‘C’ Field Sophia were yesterday remanded to prison when they appeared before Magistrate Zamena Ali at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court for their role in last Monday night’s mayhem that
resulted in the torching of several vehicles.
One of the youths pleaded guilty and is awaiting a Probation Report before receiving his sentence, while the other is awaiting trial after denying his charge.
Lloyd Grant, 17, of ‘C’ Field, Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara was charged with simple larceny, while the other 17 year-old Orandel Noel, 17, of ‘B’ Field Sophia, was arraigned for entering a dwelling house with intent to commit a felony.
In the case of Grant, which was the first to be called, he will be sent to prison for stealing a pair of sneakers valued $20,000.
Prosecutor Inspector John Singh told the court that around 17:00 hours on Monday (Polling Day) the teenager and other persons went into the dwelling house of Rishi Chand, claiming that it was being used as an illegal Polling Station.
Singh told the court that Grant picked up a pair of sneakers and immediately put it on his feet. It was while fleeing the house that Grant was apprehended by the police, who removed the sneakers from his feet. The young man was taken to the Turkeyen Police Station where he was subsequently charged.
In response to a question from Magistrate Ali, the teenager said that everything that the Prosecutor said was true.
He claimed that he saw “everybody pelting down de house” and he decided to follow other persons who went into the building.
Magistrate Ali, taking Grant’s age into consideration, ordered a Probation Report and set June 17 for it to be presented, before sentencing.
Grant, who was unrepresented by Counsel, told the Magistrate that he is a labourer and he lived by himself. But when he gave his address to the court as Charity, Essequibo, the Prosecutor interjected and informed that Grant had given a different address to the police.
It was on this basis that Prosecutor Singh argued that the defendant should be kept in custody since he did not satisfy the court that he has a proper address.
The other defendant Orandel Noel was not required to plead to his charge. It is alleged that he entered the dwelling house of Farida Prashad.
Inspector Singh related that Noel along with others was in ‘C’ Field, Sophia, in the vicinity of Prashad’s house, claiming that she had ballot boxes inside. They stoned the house and then managed to enter. However the police responded and arrested Noel while the other persons escaped.
Noel was told of the offence and was subsequently charged.
Singh strongly objected to bail stating that the stoning of Prashad’s house was uncalled for. Singh also told the court that Noel was caught in the house when he was not authorized to be there and when questioned, he could not give a proper account for his presence.
He said that if granted bail it is very likely that Noel will not return to court.
Magistrate Ali then set June 1st for the matter to come up again.
