DEAR EDITOR,
It’s beginning to get increasingly obvious that our Chinese friends at BaiShanLin are being allowed to monopolise several of our industries with the help of the current administration.
They came to Guyana with a grand promise of creating thousands of jobs by establishing a wood processing plant and equipment to produce other value added products, but after they secured large swaths of our forests we sat back and did nothing. Then they moved to our gold and diamond industry and again we did nothing. Then they took over large quantities of our land and we kept silent.
But we are not going to keep silent over BaiShanLin’s latest move. These imperialists have already moved into the trucking business using their duty-free acquired trucks to force locals out.
Our livelihood is under threat, especially since we are operating against the odds.
These trucks owned by Bai Shan Lin were imported duty-free to support their wood processing business. Up to now the wood processing business has not got off the ground and there appears to be no intention to get it going. Instead of creating employment, BaiShanLin is doing the opposite by stifling it.
We previously enjoyed a fair share of the lumber trucking business, making it possible for us to repay loans and pay our share of taxes. Up comes BaiShanLin with their 200 duty-free trucks and lower prices, forcing us out.
Where are our leaders who are tasked with protecting our local interests, including jobs and ensuring a level playing field? Could this happen in China? Hell no! If this isn’t barefaced lawlessness then I don’t know what is. We hope that this situation is remedied soon so that we Guyanese can enjoy the fruits of our own country.
Angry local truckers
