A young Police Constable was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) yesterday after a round from his colleague’s gun accidentally struck him in his left shoulder.
Nathaniel Giddings, 22 of Lover’s Lane, Mc Kenzie, Linden received his injury when the gun of a Police Corporal accidentally went off. The incident occurred at the Mc Kenzie Sports Complex, Linden around 05:45hrs and at the time the Corporal was engaged in a scuffle with two men, who had allegedly robbed persons.
According to Giddings, a member of the Tactical Service Unit, stationed at Eve Leary, Georgetown, he went to the sports complex with his two cousins to be part of the Linden Town Week activities.
He recalled that he had just entered the ground when he saw the Police Corporal trying to arrest the men. He stated that the men resisted the officer’s arrest and a scuffle ensued between them.
Giddings pointed out that he informed the Corporal that he was a policeman and tried to offer assistance to him when the gun went off.
He said that after he was shot, “I fall to the ground and the police told me to get up and walk to the station”.
While on his way to the station he fell to the ground and was left there for about two minutes, while the officer took the two robbery suspects to the station.
Giddings, who was in a semi-conscious state was then picked up by his cousins and taken to the station. He was subsequently transported to the city in a police vehicle.
However, he has since been discharged from the hospital with minor injuries.
Police in a press release issued yesterday stated that their investigations have disclosed that two police ranks, one of whom was armed with a service revolver, were making efforts to arrest two suspects in a larceny from the person matter during which a round was accidentally discharged that struck Constable Nathaniel Giddings who was in the vicinity at the time.
The two robbery suspects are in police custody assisting with the investigation.
