On a truncated second day of the final round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Raj Singh Insurance sponsored three-day under-19 Inter-County cricket tournament, Berbice moved a step closing to lifting the title today by extending their first innings lead to 134 when rain stopped play for the final time at 16:32hrs.
When play finally began at 14:00hrs after heavy overnight and early morning rain washed out the entire first session and 100 minutes in the second, Berbice resuming on 196-6 in reply to Essequibo’s 139, reached 273-7 when a heavy shower sent the players and Umpires scurrying off the field for the last time for the day.
Daniel Lewis hit four boundaries in his unbeaten 37 and had with him Retesh Umroa who hit a single four in an unfinished 34 as Berbice, who only need a draw to take Championship honors batted out the penultimate day.
After play eventually resumed it was again halted after eight overs with the score on 202-7 after Kassim Khan was trapped LBW to left-arm spinner Akeenie Adams who finished the day with 4-48 in another controlled spell of spin bowling.
The ground staff did an excellent job and worked hard for their money on a day in which rain was always threatening from dark angry looking clouds which floated over the Enmore sward all day.
When play recommenced after a 15-minute delay Daniel Lewis and Retesh Umroa took their to 225-7 by Tea as apart from Skipper Kemo Paul, Essequibo used a spin attack for the entire day although the spinners had some problems gripping the wet ball and 6 foot, 2 inch pacer Denzil Harry who bowled well on the first day did not bowl at all yesterday.
After the break, the small gathering which included former West Indies left-hander Alvin Kallicharran, who has been invited by the GCB to work with the youths, must have thought he was in England instead of the tropics judging from the overcast skies and English-like conditions that prevailed yesterday.
