Apr 15, 2015 Letters
Dear Editor,
It was with a heavy heart that I sat to write this letter because I did not want to say anything about this young lady, but I recently read an article in the Guyana Times in which Ms. Africo Selman was utterly disrespectful to Brigadier David Granger and even pronounced on his class by saying that he cannot match Mrs. Elizabeth Harper for class.
I kept reading all the statements she made recently against the People’s National Congress (PNC) and APNU and said to myself that we all have the right to sing for our supper, but in doing so we must stay within our competence. Since when has Ms. Selman acquired the competence to be a judge of class?
Ms. Selman announced at the PPP Kitty Rally on March 29, 2015 that she joined the PNC in 2006. In doing so she made it sound as if she walked into a PNC office and joined voluntarily. By her own admission to us she was being encouraged to join the Party by one of its senior functionaries, but was never minded to accept the invitation.
The truth of the matter is that my wife and I were looking for a young person to recommend to the PNC as a candidate for the General and Regional Elections of 2006, and, since we knew her from her days of attending Queen’s College, my wife, who always gave her a lift in her vehicle when she saw her awaiting transportation on the East Bank public road, saw her and asked if she would have any objections to have her name submitted to be a candidate for the upcoming elections. She agreed but showed no interest after.
When I saw her behaviour, I told my wife not to worry with her if that is the level of interest she’ll show. Preferring not to listen to me, my wife persevered with her, filled the membership application form, got her to sign it, provided her with the $100 application fee, submitted her name to be a candidate and introduced her to Congress Place.
Africo Selman became an Member of Parliament after the 2006 elections and, believe me, she never returned to us in all those years of her Parliamentary life to express her gratitude to us for what we had done for her. Never did she. This is the person who now holds herself out as a judge of class. What class did she exhibit towards us!
Over the years she has metamorphosed from an ugly duckling to a gaggling goose against her political past.
It will be useful for her to realize that her world has not ended and that what goes around, comes around. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
