Led by a delightful 58 from Akshaya Persaud, West Demerara Under-18s
registered a comfortable 64-run win against the touring United States of America Cricket Academy (USACA) Under-18s yesterday at the Wales Community Centre ground on the West Bank of Demerara, a venue about 18 miles from Georgetown.
Played in sweltering heat on a ‘slow turner’ and well manicured outfield the hosts were all out in the last over for 193 thanks to two good partnerships. Persaud who hit four sixes and two fours in his half-century, added 54 with Kelvin Shewprasad (20) for the fifth wicket before the last pair of Daniel Basdeo, who smashed two colossal sixes and a four in 27 and Avinash Ramgobin (7*) put together 37 to ensure West Demerara posted what turned out to be a winning total.
Skipper Chetram Persaud (3-22), Gauranshu Sharma (2-35) and consistent left-arm spinner Jash Patel (2-17) bowled well for the USACA U-18s who were bowled out for 129 in 41.1 overs. Only the Skipper, who returned with the bat to hit 25, Neil Tagore (18) and Jash Patel (17*), offered resistance to West Demerara bowling attack as Travis Persaud (3-28) and Nicolai
Reddy (3-16) did the damage with the ball.
West Demerara, outfitted with Back and Gold uniforms provided by their sponsors Mavericks, began badly when Renaldo Renee was sent packing for a duck with just six runs on the board.
Mark Jeffers (11) and Persaud, who batted attractively, took the score to 41 before pacer Jamiel Jackman bowled the left-handed Jeffers.
It soon 55-4 when Jash Patel got rid of Malcolm Hubbard (6) and Travis Persaud (1) as he struck twice in the space four runs. It was at this stage that Shewprasad joined forces with Persaud to embark on ‘operation rebuild’ and entertained the fair sized crowd with attractive stroke play before Gauranshu Sharma bowled Persaud to separate the pair and leave the home team on 109-5.
Jash Patel struck again when he tempted Shewprasad to loft one to deep mid-wicket at 130-6 and when Chetram Persaud removed Chetnarine Pooran for 23 it took the last wicket stand to rally their side as the last eight overs produced 49 runs.
The USA side began inauspiciously when Sagar Patel (7) was run out at 8-1 before the left-handed Derick Narine, who got going with consecutive boundaries, was bowled behind his back, sweeping an off-spinner Richie Looknauth, who continues to bowl with a suspect action.
From 25-2 Sharma and Neil Tagore added just five runs before Sharma (6) fell to Reddy and Tagore (18) was bowled by Travis Persaud as the visitors slipped to 54-4. Nandan Polisetty (1) was then run out at 68-5 before the left-handed Persaud with his nickname ‘Mario’ written on the back of his shirt, hit a huge six which seemed to sail over the Demerara River and into the Village of Diamond on the other side and the ball was lost.
But with a harder and much newer ball off-spinner Travis Persaud comprehensively bowled his unrelated namesake as the USA Skipper, one of four Guyanese in the USA side, inexplicably played no shot the one that did not turn and skidded through and was bowled at 91-6 after being given a reprieve off Basdeo on 11.
Rafeek Nazeer (16) and Jash Patel (17*) tried to score quickly towards the end but it was too little too late as USACA U-18 lost their second match in two days following their two-wicket defeat against the National U-17 side at Providence on Wednesday.
After a break today for Good Friday the action resumes tomorrow with the USACA U-18s facing East Coast U-18 at Enmore. The USACA U-15s plays the Guyana U-15s at Bourda while their U-13s clash with Everest’s U-13s at GYO in the other matches set for tomorrow.
