As the Miss Renaissance Pageant kicks into full swing, the contestants visited the Palms Geriatric Home on Thursday, where they presented the staff with toiletries, clothing and other articles to assist in caring for the elderly patients residing there.
The 11 contestants: Mia Ritchie, Jo-Ann Forde, Rosalin Corlette, Beverley Peters, Deon Lyn Lewis, Jonell Waldron, Melissa Dow-Richardson, Tomika Cooke, Michelle Alphonso, Vanessa Williams and Jeanne Jeffrey, were in high spirits as they spoke with Kaieteur News.
This year the pageant is focusing on the care attributed to senior citizens, specifically those at the Uncle Eddie’s Home and the Palms.
The women, all of whom had pleasant things to say about the senior citizens at the Palms, made some recommendations on how the facility can be improved. One contestant recalled “being moved” when visiting two of the wards yesterday.
She explained that the scent emanating from that area would “turn anyone away”. She stated that it is obvious that the Palms is understaffed and recommended that more staff ought to be employed to deal with the issue. Some of the contestants even volunteered to help in whichever way they can.
Contestant number seven, Mrs. Melissa Dow-Richardson, told this newspaper that one of the pageant’s main areas of focus is meeting the various humanitarian needs of Guyanese.
Dow-Richardson explained that contestants were fortunate enough to get a tour of all eight wards of the Palms and it is evident that the residents are alert, and eager to mingle.
She suggested that a little more physical activity is needed and would be beneficial to the seniors. She said that as a table tennis coach, she plans to engage the Guyana Table Tennis Association to donate a table tennis board. She said the sport is not too demanding and could be great for recreational purposes at the Palms.
Pageant Director and Co-ordinator, Ms. Negla Brandis explained that the idea behind the pageant is to promote mature, intellectual and well-rounded Guyanese women, who are over the age of 30. She explained that this year’s pageant comprises well educated women from Georgetown, Berbice, Lethem and the East Coast of Demerara.
The seventh Miss Renaissance Pageant, which is scheduled for April 4, at the National Cultural Centre, will see the 11 contestants competing in four major categories; Talent (which must incorporate some aspect of Guyanese culture), Corporate Attire, Evening Gown and Questions and Answers.
The queen will receive $100,000, a trip overseas, compliments of Fly Jamaica, a trip to Kaieteur Falls, a variety of food baskets and designer outfits, amongst other things. The first, second and third runners-up will receive trips to Baganara Island Resort, floral arrangements, food hampers from Ricks and Sari, Nigel’s and Survival Supermarkets and NAMILCO.
