The M.V. Sabanto which was transporting passengers to the Good-Hope/Supenaam Ferry Stelling; ran aground in the vicinity of Hog-Island on Wednesday evening, leaving a number of passengers stranded in the Essequibo River until yesterday morning when they were rescued by speedboat operators.
The ferry had encountered similar problems early December last, with the vessel ending up in some bushes aback of Wakenaam. The initial incident involving the M.V. Sabanto took mechanical workers almost a week to render assistance to persons whose vehicles were left stranded on the boat.
Wednesday night’s incident saw a number of passengers who were heading to the Essequibo Coast again being stranded for hours due to the boat ending up on a sand bank.
A Transport and Harbours official opined late Wednesday that it was a possibility that the M.V. Sabanto was grounded due to the shallow area which the boat was traversing at the time. The official further mentioned that when it was safe, passengers would have been allowed to board the speed boat to Supenaam which they did yesterday morning.
The M.V. Sabanto departed the Parika Ferry Stelling after 6 pm and was expected to moor at the Good Hope/Supenaam Ferry Stelling after 8 pm on Wednesday, before the incident.
While concrete information as to what may have caused the ferry to be grounded has not surfaced, a source has indicated that the Chinese-made ferry may have a problem. The source said that the boat may have experienced a computer shut down and when that happens, the vessel would drift and the engine could become stuck in the mud which would pose further difficulty in getting the boat out of the shallow mud.
The source further emphasised that the ferry should ply the Supenaam/Parika route when the tide is high. The M.V. Sabanto after being stuck for hours was able to moor at the Supenaam Ferry Stelling around noon yesterday.
Only recently, the Transport and Harbours Department desilted certain locations in the Essequibo River.
