Merry Christmas to all the readers of this column!
A Merry Christmas is also extended to the Editor and Staff of the Kaieteur News, including the unsung persons who actually print the newspaper each night.
I also want to say, “Merry Christmas!” to the vendors who sell these newspapers. Thank you all for keeping this newspaper alive in 2014.
This past year saw fearful hands trying to strangle Kaieteur News and its publisher, Glenn Lall. Brave men and women have kept us consistent and going amidst the threats to destroy us.
But the bravest of all has been our publisher, Glenn Lall. Today, I want to dedicate this column to him and to use this opportunity to let him know how much I appreciate what he has done for the people of this country.
Merry Christmas to you and your entire family, Glenn! Your courage and remarkable principles make Christmas worthwhile.
It is said that “Whom, the Gods would destroy, they first make mad”. The government’s acts of madness against the publisher of this newspaper would have broken a lesser man. But not Glenn Lall. He has stood firm like the Rock of Gibraltar, unshaken, unwounded, unmoved.
He has been given his fair share of advice from well-intentioned persons. They have urged him to back off. That is a language he does not understand.
Some have urged him to give up the struggle because they feel sufficient persons are not coming forward to support him. They say to him, “The people you are fighting for are not fighting for themselves so why are you holding yourself out as a sacrificial lamb.”
In fact, I was one of those who made this point to him just recently. His response was typical of the man and what he stands for. He looked at me and asked, “So if I do not fight, what will happen to Guyana?”
I understand now what he meant. He is prepared to die for his country. He is prepared to give his life in order to stand for what he believes in because Glenn has always believed that each one of us is put here on Earth for a purpose and if we do not live up to that purpose then we are not being faithful to the author of life. He intends to be faithful. He intends to fulfill what he was born to fulfill.
I raised with him again the power of the State. If the State could have got to Dr. Walter Rodney, if it could have destroyed an international scholar of his repute, then why would it hesitate to destroy him? This is what I threw out to Glenn.
His answer silenced me. He said that even if they jailed him, the Kaieteur News would not stop exposing the skullduggery and evil of those who are raping the country and handing out the spoils to their friends.
He said that even from behind jail, the Kaieteur News will go on. He will not stop. Even if they kill him, Glenn swears that the newspaper will go on doing what it is doing, exposing the indecent, the immoral and corrupt.
It was his turn to ask the questions. He asked me, “If I stop today, what will happen to Guyana? What will happen to this country? What will ‘they’ do to Guyana? I cannot allow this to happen.
The more I thought about it, the more I am convinced that this man Glenn Lall needs to be protected. He is a special treasure to Guyana and we need to ensure that no harm comes to him and that he is protected against his formidable enemies.
That latter answer confirmed what I have been saying for a long time. This country has a super hero. That super hero is Super Glenn.
On this Christmas morning, I once again tip my hat to an outstanding Guyanese who is fighting the glorious fight so that your children and my children can have something to live for. He is fighting so that each of us can have a chance of living out our purpose.
Merry Christmas Glenn Lall!
