Relatives of Nyozi Goodman will know within days whether the skeletal remains that were found last July at Pattensen, East Coast Demerara, are those of the missing St. Stanislaus College teacher.
Crime Chief Leslie James told Kaieteur News yesterday, that he expects to have the results from DNA samples taken from the remains “not later than next Friday”.
Investigators had taken blood samples from Goodman’s parents and from the Pattensen remains, but almost a month passed before the samples were sent to an overseas laboratory.
The remains, said to be those of a female of African ancestry, were found in a bushy lot on August 24. An autopsy, performed by Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh, revealed that the victim had three incised wounds in the vicinity of the hip. Evidence reportedly indicated that she bled to death at the scene.
A canvas belt was tied to the victim’s right arm and a pair of underwear was found near the body. Goodman’s mother, Carol Green, subsequently identified the belt as her daughter’s.
According to sources, Dr. Singh established that the slain woman was about five feet, five inches tall, appeared to be of African ancestry and was between 25 to 40 years old. She is believed to have died some three weeks prior to the discovery. Goodman is also said to be five feet, five inches tall, and also had a ‘rotting’ tooth, which was a feature that was also observed on the remains.
Nyozi Goodman disappeared on July 6th last, shortly after supervising students, who were participating in the Inter-Secondary Schools’ Basketball Championship at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, After the game, Ms. Goodman reportedly told her students that she would be staying behind, as she expected someone to pick her up and take her home.
Kaieteur News understands that a taxi driver admitted to taking the teacher to the Gymnasium, but denied that he had picked her up after the game.
Police had also questioned him about the disappearance of Police Lance Corporal, Patriena Nicholson in August 2009. He was detained briefly after the remains were found.
The burly suspect has had prior arrests for armed robbery and for allegedly harbouring two of the country’s most dangerous fugitives.
The man and Goodman were said to be in a relationship up to the time of her disappearance.
