– after quitting local health sector
The local Ministry of Health may have to start counting its losses and possibly even look to urgently engage a process of rethinking its bilateral relations with the Government of Cuba.
This is in light of the fact that Guyana has reportedly been short-changed in terms of the support that should be forthcoming from doctors who hail from the island country.
Based on an agreement between the Governments of Cuba and Guyana, Cuban medical personnel have over the years been rendering their expert skills to Guyana.
The support is usually delivered in tranches. Doctors would serve for a specified period before they are relieved by another batch.
The members of the old batch are therefore expected to return to their homeland.
But according to information reaching this publication at least three Cuban doctors who were seconded to the local health Ministry have gone missing. And the reports relating to this development, suggest that the medical officials have absconded to the United States of America.
Among those who have reportedly left these shores unceremoniously is a pathologist who was stationed at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. Senior officials of the public hospital were tight-lipped yesterday when this publication sought to confirm the state of affairs.
Kaieteur News has however, been able to ascertain that the absence of the pathologist, had in fact severely affected the completion of Post Mortem examinations at the hospital.
This publication understands that the hospital’s administration was forced to put measures in place to ensure that post mortems were conducted in a timely manner.
Guyana currently has about three qualified pathologists and was gaining much needed support from the Cuban Pathologist.
The main pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh, is reportedly tasked with doing operations across the country.
This publication was made aware that another missing Cuban doctor, who was attached to the Physiotherapy Department of the public hospital and yet another from the Mahaicony Hospital, have also absconded.
Reports are that the other two doctors have also travelled to the United States. All of their departures were within the past week but there are reports that there have been other similar events in the past.
And even more interesting, are the reports that the doctors’ departure are part of a broader collusion within the Cuban Medical Brigade and perhaps even include the cooperation of Embassy officials.
This publication understands that the Hospital as well as the Ministry of Health is very aware that the doctors have departed without warning.
There are reports that an investigation has been launched to ascertain exactly what occurred in order to determine the way forward.
