– Stepson in custody
Quick action by ranks in Berbice, led to the capture of a 20-year-old murder suspect – who it is believed brutally killed his stepfather – whilst he was still in the process of cleaning up after the act, which occurred around 20:30 hrs on Wednesday.
The gruesome incident was described as a crime of hate as the two men reportedly had an ongoing feud.
The dead man was identified as Deochand Singh, 48, of Freeyard, Port Mourant, Berbice, a father of two, who lived with the suspect’s mother. The stepson is a labourer who resided at the same address.
The woman it is understood has three older children – two boys and a girl.
Kaieteur News was told that the family was living in Venezuela and Deochand Singh had fathered a child with his step daughter some five years ago when the girl was 15 years old. He then escaped to Guyana.
Singh, who was a hire car driver, was also well known to the authorities as he was said to be a con artist and was constantly in trouble. It was also revealed that the man and his stepsons, especially the suspect, were not on good terms because of the ‘fraud scheme’.
His eldest stepson was recently charged with fraud, a product of Singh’s clandestine operation. The stepsons were also said to be bitter that the man had impregnated their sister.
Kaieteur News also learnt that Singh and the suspect never got along. It is understood that the suspect never wanted to participate in his stepfather’s ‘con man scheme’, because he was being constantly harassed by persons and the police.
On Wednesday, Deochand Singh went to a wake house and the stepson decided to ambush him upon his return. The suspect reportedly collected a cutlass, knife and a piece of wood and waited by the gate for Singh.
Singh reportedly returned home intoxicated and was about to enter the gate when the suspect emerged from his hiding place and floored him with a lash to the head with the piece of wood. The assailant then pounced upon Singh and stabbed him repeatedly. He then took the cutlass and severed the man’s neck.
It is understood that he and other individual then threw the body in a pond in the yard and was heard exclaiming “let them fish eat he out.”
The commotion caused neighbours to summon the police who responded promptly. The lawmen were told that the perpetrators were in the process of burying a body. They arrived in time and caught the man in the act. The cutlass was also recovered.
The police are looking for the other weapons and several individuals who might be able to provide some more useful information. They are of the belief that more than one person may have committed the crime, since Deochand Singh was a burly individual and the suspect was small in stature and may not have been able to commit the act by himself.
Investigations are continuing.
