Police have detained three suspects as they seek to ascertain the identity of the gunman who killed 29-year-old Guyana Water Inc. employee Marvin Cumbermack on Monday night.
‘A’ Division Commander Clifton Hicken said yesterday that two of the detained men were “well known” to the police. The suspects are said to be from Sophia, Meadowbrook and D’Urban Backlands.
Commander Hicken said that detectives are receiving support from citizens in their investigation.
“We did a lot of work; we are closing in on them and we will put them on an identification parade soon.”
Kaieteur News was unable to ascertain whether detectives were able to lift any fingerprints from the bicycle that the killer left at the scene.
Cumbermack, 29, was shot in the chest while riding through Section ‘E’ South Sophia, by a gunman who made off with the slain man’s motorcycle.
Police said that the killer came to the scene on a bicycle, which he left there.
Residents recalled hearing about four gunshots and then seeing the GWI employee lying on the parapet, while the gunman, who had dropped his bicycle, rode north out of Sophia on Cumbermack’s motorcycle.
Eyewitnesses said the gunman was fair in complexion and was wearing a dark-blue jersey and a pair of three-quarter pants.
Ingrid Arthur, the slain man’s sister-in law, said that Cumbermack had picked up her daughter earlier in the evening from lessons. He then dropped off the child at ‘B’ Field, Sophia and was reportedly heading to work when he was attacked.
In recent weeks at least three Sophia residents have been shot and robbed while passing through the community, and residents have appealed for increased police patrols.
