Governor of the Bank of Guyana, Lawrence Williams was laid to rest Saturday afternoon after a funeral service at St George’s Cathedral.
He died of cancer in a city hospital on May last.
Among those paying tribute to the late Governor was Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh. “Lawrence Williams served as Governor of the Bank of Guyana since 2005, making him the second longest serving Governor in that institution’s history.
His total service to the Bank amounted to 35 years, having been first recruited by the Bank in 1979, immediately after he graduated from the University of Guyana.”
He was therefore the Bank’s longest serving employee of the current generation, Ashni Singh said.
Also attending his funeral Service were President Donald Ramotar, members of the government, members of the parliamentary opposition, private sector operatives and people from all walks of life.
“Small wonder that Lawrence Williams earned appointment by then President Bharrat Jagdeo in 2005 as the head of the Bank of Guyana,” Dr Ashni Singh said.
“It was also President Jagdeo who would later in 2011 award Lawrence one of Guyana’s highest national awards, the Cacique’s Crown of Honour, for distinguished service to the financial sector and to central banking functions in particular,” he added.
Williams was laid to rest in Cane Grove Methodist churchyard, East Coast Demerara.
