Sandra Daniels, a forty- eight year –old mother of five from Dennis Street, Sophia, was remanded to prison, after she attempted to smuggle cocaine to Spain via the Guyana Post Office Corporation.
Daniels pleaded not guilty to the charge of Possession of Narcotics for the Purpose of Trafficking, when she appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
According to the charge, on May 8 last at the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC), Daniels had in her possession 274 grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Details of the case were presented by Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) Prosecutor, Oswald Massiah.
Massiah told the Court that Daniels visited the Post Office on Thursday last with the intention of posting a carboard box to Spain.
According to the Prosecutor, during a procedural check, which was carried out by CANU officials in the presence of the defendant, a quantity of salon products were found in the box, which included fake nails, nail decoration and buffers.
“A further search carried out on the box of cosmetics revealed transparent plastic filled with cocaine concealed in the middle of each of the forty-two buffers,” Messiah explained.
He told the court that the defendant disclosed to investigators under caution that she was asked to ship the products to a ‘male’ counterpart in Spain, whom she met in Guyana, two weeks ago.
Daniels had no legal representation as she stood before the court yesterday.
However, when she was given a chance to speak, the woman requested bail and claimed that she is employed as a receptionist at Banks DIH Limited. She told the court that she had no knowledge of the illegal substance, which was found concealed in the cosmetic items.
“I could not see clearly what was inside the products,” Daniels said
Prosecutor Massiah told the court that the defendant had been deported from England after she was arraigned on drug trafficking charges.
The woman then explained that she was sentenced to seven years imprisonment in England for a similar offence, but that she only spent thirteen months in jail, after which she was deported.
As such, Magistrate Latchman remanded her to prison and ordered that she returns to court on June 2.
