Dear Sports Editor,
It is often said that a sports star will die twice, the first time at retirement. For elite athletes who have dedicated their lives to sport, what happens when your time comes to an end?
Elite athletes train extensively for years, in many cases, consuming the majority of their young lives, often making extensive personal sacrifices in order to pursue their dreams of glory.
However, what happens to these athletes once they leave the days filled with rigorous training, and the buzz and adrenaline of competing?
No doubt, in his prime and time, Moses Dwarka was the best. His dominance as an athlete created an indelible mark on the minds of those that competed with him and the minds of those that just want to see him run.
Moses Dwarka’s achievements and accomplishments in representing this nation regionally and internationally are testimony to his greatness. With the depth of his brilliance, he triumphed over his entire struggle and odds.
Moses Dwarka was a well known individual, and his name was a household one especially on race day. He was well known around the sugar estates and was a household name especially on race day. His competitors respected him and he likewise. Moses was aware of his running ability, his stamina, his endurance but never boasted any of it. His running did all the talking. Lots have dominated throughout their careers, but after their retirements, are brought up very little in sports conversations. There are so many athletes like this who we were talking about at one point in our lives and don’t even get a thought today. None of those athletes experienced a sadder fall from grace than Moses Dwarka. He was well known around the sugar estates and was a household name especially on race day. His competitors respected him and he likewise. Moses was aware of his running ability, his stamina, his endurance but never boasted any of it. His running did all the talking.
We have all simply discarded him from our memories to make room for the next phenom who will capture our imaginations until he is unable to do so too. It’s appalling, that a man of such stature has gone unnoticed. His brilliance as an athlete has long eluded us.
Despite all the accolades he has won for this country, he has got nothing in return except for a Medal of Service in 1998, and recently, a stipend of G$5,000 per month which he is currently receiving.
This little master, who is well known as the “barefoot king” and hails from Better Hope, on the East Coast Demerara is living a simple life in his time of need, trying to make much from a mere NIS and Old Age pension.
Yours Respectfully,
M. Azimullah
