As the first day of 2014 marked the 55th Anniversary of the end of the Cuban Revolution, President of the Guyana solidarity movement with Cuba” Halim Khan said that calls are being made to multiply actions in support of the Cuban Five in all parts of the world, with renewed strength.
The Five were detained while monitoring from the city of Miami, the movements and activities by violent groups and individuals engaged in planning terrorist acts against Cuba, which led to more than 5,000 deaths and people with disabilities for more than 50 years.
January 1, 2014 marked the 55th Anniversary of the end of the Cuban Revolution (July 26, 1953 – January 1, 1959), an event that has transformed this Caribbean territory from an outpost of North American imperialism into a Socialist State system.
“We must never stop demanding that President Obama release the Five, and it is important to continue to take the struggle to Washington, the seat of power responsible for the imprisonment of the Five for more than 15 years.” Khan noted.
He explained that the International Committee for the freedom of the Cuban Five is already immersed in the organizing of the Third “5 Days for the Cuban 5 in Washington DC” which will take place from June 4-11 2014.
He said this action was unanimously supported by the 272 delegates from 52 countries who attended the IX Colloquium for the Liberation of the Cuban Five recently held in the city of Holguin.
“Plans for the five-days will include a rally in front of the White House, a large public meeting with known personalities and parliamentarians from around the world , to come with us to knock on the doors of the Congress of the United States.” Khan said.
“We have approached the beginning of yet another year, a sensitive time for families around the world. Much more so for those who have lost their loved ones. And in the case of the Cuban Five, because they remain imprisoned in the United States, they are still missing from the tables of their homes.”
Last year, René González returned to his homeland and in 2014 Fernando González will return after serving, like Rene, his complete sentence. “We cannot allow Antonio to have to wait until his sentence is finished in 2017, or Ramon in 2024, or Gerardo to live the rest of his life in prison!”
Underscoring that it has never been more urgent and necessary to continue the struggle for the freedom of the Cuban five unfairly imprisoned in the United States, Khan said every day that passes is one more day of injustice committed against them, their families and their people.
“To punish with outrageous prison sentences the very men whose mission was to defend their people against cowardly attacks while the perpetrators of these attacks walk free is absolutely detestable.”
