Gillian Thompson, Chief Librarian of the National Library, died at around 14:30hrs yesterday, after a speeding white Toyota Allion car slammed into the bus that she was in.
According to reports, bandits were speeding away from police, north along Shiv Chanderpaul Drive when the car slammed into the library-owned bus which was heading west along North Road, Georgetown.
The car ended up in a nearby canal (between Church Street and North Road) while the blue bus (PDD 4017) slammed into the rail of the bridge which connects North Road and Church Street.
Relatives of the 47-year-old woman were told that it was not bandits in the vehicle, but rather, police officers who were chasing after bandits.
“Is the police who supposed to be protecting people deh driving speed, speed, and killing people,” one relative said.
Thompson died on the spot, while the rescued men were treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital for minor injuries, and are assisting with investigations.
