The People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C) has highlighted the various preparations being made for the holding of the Local Government Elections—the first in over 19 years.
General Secretary Clement Rohee said that the party has noted the current approaches taken by the various arms of the “PPP/C Government” in fulfilling respective Constitutional and Statutory mandates with regards to the preparation for the holding of Local Government Elections.
He said that it is testimony of President Donald Ramotar’s commitment, made on behalf of the PPP/C Government, to hold Local Government Elections as soon as possible.
Rohee told the media that the PPP, the governing party, continues to follow the developments and is very supportive of the government’s efforts in this direction.
He commended in particular, the public awareness information placed by the Guyana Elections Commission in the print and electronic media as well as the distribution and posting of Sketch Maps, Description of Boundaries and Booklets on the “new” Electoral system.
The General Secretary also pointed out the seminars/workshops which were organized and are being held by the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development on behalf of the PPP/C.
“The PPP, like the other Political Parties which have seats on the Regional Democratic Councils, has attended and participated in these seminars/workshops…The PPP noted the attendance and participation at these seminars/workshops and is very pleased with the discussions which focused on topics extremely relevant to the holding of Local Government Elections.
Rohee told the press conference as well, that the PPP commends President Ramotar’s withholding assent to the Local Government Bill and for returning it to the National Assembly in keeping with the Laws.
He said that the Party is hoping that A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC) will now seize the opportunity to undo the errors they made in the Bill, so that the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils can benefit from the Local Government Task Force recommendations which were contained in the initial Bill when it was laid in Parliament in 2012.
Stand up for your children, please.
