Mae’s are overall team winners
Kyle Edghill, Gavin Mangroo, Jamaal Butt, Tariq Saunders and Shemar Britton turned in commendable performances to win their respective divisions when the Digicel\National Schools Table Tennis championships concluded yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Kyle Edghill of Mae’s beat Sheldon Arthley of Bartica 11-7, 11-8, 11-8 to take the U-15 crown. Arthley defeated Stephan Sankar 11-8, 8-11, 11-1, 19-11 while Edghill overcame Kristoff Sookhoo of The Business School 11-4, 12-10, 11-4 in the semi finals.
Gavin Mangroo of Mae’s won the final of the Novice division; he got the better of Jonathan Findlay of Mae’s 8-11, 12-14, 11-8, 11-8, 11-9. Mangroo beat Brandon Fiedtkou of The Business School 10-12, 11-8, 13-11, 11-8 and Tyriq Clarke of St. Roses lost to Findlay 4-11, 9-11, 8-11 in the semis.
Jamaal Butt of Tutorial Academy, Berbice trounced Khalil Ninvalle of Mae’s 9-11,8-11,13-11,11-7,11-9 in the U-13 final; Butts overcame Jeremy Singh of Mae’s 11-1,11-8,11-8,11-9 and Ninvalle beat Kristy Lopes of Mae’s 11-8,11-3,11-0 in the semi finals.
The U-11 segment was won by Tariq Saunders of North Georgetown Primary who defeated Terrence Raush of Rama Krishna Primary 9-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-5 in the final. Sunders beat Neveah Clarkston 11-6,11-7,12-10 and Niran Bissu of Mae’s went down to Rausch 6-11,6-11,6-11 in the semis.
Shemar Britton of Queens College defeated Elishaba Johnson of St. Stanislaus 11-8, 11-13, 11-6, 6-11 14-12 to win the U-18 final. Britton beat Kevon Corbin of St. Stanislaus 11-4, 13-11, 11-8 and Johnson overcame Miguel Wong of Mae’s 11-7, 11-4, 11-5 in the semifinal games.
Meanwhile, Mae’s having won the U-13, 15 and Novice divisions grabbed the best overall team prize. The best dressed team award went to West Demerara, the most discipline school trophy was won by Bartica Secondary, the best supporting team accolade went to Ash Educational Institute, the most improved female player award was taken by Divanna Best of Marina Academy, the most outstanding male was Shamar Britton and the most improve male was Johnson.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony president of the Guyana Table Tennis Association Godfrey Monroe thanked the sponsors and congratulated the winners. He stated that the objective of the tournament was met and this augurs well for the future of the sport in Guyana. Gavin Hope of Digicel congratulated the Association for a well organized tournament and urged the players to continue training.
