GPL generators disrupt traffic on West Demerara

Long lines of traffic on West Coast Demerara was the scene yesterday as Guyana Power Light (GPL) moved one of its 8.4 megawatt Wartsila generators to its new power plant site at Vreed-en-Hoop.
The state’s power company’s engine was moved from its Parika location to Vreed-en-Hoop. Escorting the tedious operation was GPL operatives, staffers from the Ministry of Public Works, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) and the police.
A special truck transported each 130-tonne engine.
The engines and components valued US$26M; arrived three weeks ago at the Georgetown port.
They were placed on a barge and taken to Parika. GPL was unable to land the engines at Vreed-en-Hoop, located one mile away across the river from the John Fernandes wharf where they landed. There were no landing facilities at Vreed-en-Hoop.
At Parika, the engines are to be placed on foundation built of piles as long as 70 feet.
The 8.6 megawatts engines, which will bring to 17, the number of Wartsila engines operating in Guyana, are by far the biggest of the lot.
