DEAR EDITOR,
It is no secret that the most formidable constraint to progress in every aspect of life in our country continues to be the widening division between the two races that make up the overwhelming majority of our society.
It therefore stands to reason that this problem would have been on the front-burner of efforts by all those who profess to have the good of our nation at heart to make the most strenuous efforts to eradicate this lingering and crippling scourge within our society. These would certainly include the government, the political parties, religious groups, education officials, regional and community functionaries, news and views disseminators, parents and ordinary citizens,
On the contrary, it is depressing to note that there is little or no noticeable attempt, either methodical or haphazard, in this regard by any of these.
In fact, it is patently clear that some of these, and maybe more-so the political parties, have been exploiting this very situation to further their own ambitions.
There is much that can be done towards elimination of this bugbear that is hampering our national advancement and peaceful coexistence, through a concerted effort by all those aforementioned.
There was once a Race Relations Commission that was mandated to deal with this vital feature of our national welfare and security.
I am now proposing that we resuscitate this body and give it the necessary tools and authority to formulate an all-encompassing policy and take the necessary actions to expedite this, thereby furthering the maintenance of harmonious relations among all the ethnic groups in Guyana.
Please do your part to assist this endeavour.
Roy Paul
