This year’s GuyExpo, Guyana’s premier trade fair and exposition will see the participation of a whopping 14 Chinese companies.
This is according to Tourism Minister (ag) Irfaan Ali, who, during a media briefing last evening, defended that the companies will be here especially to buy, and lend technological support, while strengthening ties with Guyana.
GuyExpo 2013 will see the largest international participation, with 12 countries confirmed to attend. Minister Ali made mention of only four entities from India and St. Lucia respectively.
He said that to date, 265 exhibitors have already finalized participation, with that number expected to soon go up.
Delegations are also expected to come from Argentina, Trinidad and Tobago, Nepal, and the United States of America. The Minister noted that Brazil will also be making a “special investment”, while evaluating further business opportunities.
Under the theme ‘Advancing Productivity through Innovation, Modernisation, and Expansion’, the event will kick off on October 3rd and will run through October 6th at the Sophia Exhibition Site.
GuyExpo 2013 is being held in collaboration with Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA), in commemoration of its 50th Anniversary.
With the increase in international participation, there will be an increase in law enforcement presence, and significantly tightened security measures.
Johnny Mortley, GuyExpo’s Security and Safety Manager, disclosed that there will be additional entrance and exits, as well as the presence of private security personnel, and medical officials in the case of an emergency.
At the beginning of next month, there will also be the launching of a 68-page magazine, with is intended to further sell GuyExpo.
Ticket prices for Adults is $500, with Children $300, and cars $1000. It was noted that a set number of tickets will be printed for each day, and that after those are sold out, patrons will not be allowed inside the venue.
As far as entertainment goes, GuyExpo’s Entertainment Manager, Lennox Canterbury, said that emphasis will be placed on local talent.
Canterbury said that the issues of music being too loud will also be regularized to go well with both patrons and those living in close proximity to the site.
He also disclosed that there will be a ‘kiddies park’ with bouncing castles, face painting, and merry-go-rounds.
Canterbury noted too that beverage companies, Banks DIH and Ansa McAl, have already sponsored two separate entertainment nights, which are much anticipated by fans of GuyExpo.
With close to 200 exhibitors, GuyExpo first started in 1995. Today, it is Guyana’s biggest exposition event, with over 460 businesses exhibiting their products.
It became an annual event in 2004, under the Chairmanship of Keith Burrowes, and is now the longest sustained exhibition in the Caribbean.
The focus over the years has remained on the development of especially small and medium sized enterprises.
