Eighteen-year-old Sachia Vickery made her WTA debut by topping Croat Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, 6-4, 6-4 for a first-round win yesterday at the U.S. Open.
Vickery showed great skill and patience as she fought back to defeat the Croatian, Lucic-Baroni, in straight sets yesterday afternoon.
Vickery, who has Guyanese parentage, fought back from two breaks down in the opening set to seal the set 6-4. In that opening set, the wild carded American fought immensely after dropping her opening to game to Baroni who jumped out to a 2-0 lead, she immediately broke back to remain on serve 2-1.
It soon moved to 3-1 after Vickery found serving tough, out on court 7, she dropped that game 40-15, that was all that she needed as she would regain composure to riddle off the next 5 of 6 service games to close out the set.
The second set was much of the first. Vickery trailed 3-2 early in the second set but she would find another level of inspiration to riddle winners to all parts of the courts as she would break and then jump ahead 4-3. She would soon break again to lead 5-3 that was followed by another service break as the pressure of serving out her first professional victory, with the change over eminent, she surrendered her service game.
Sachia dug deep to break her veteran opponent at love to close out the victory and move to the second round.
Vickery, a 18-year-old rising tennis star in the ilk of the Williams sisters and Sloane Stephens, qualified for the U.S. Open in the USTA Girls 18s National Championship, easily handling Alexandra Kiick 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 recently to earn the coveted place at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Back then, Vickery, from Miramar, FL, had said, “It feels unbelievable,” “It hasn’t sunken in that I’m going to be playing at the U.S. Open. “It’s been my dream since I started playing tennis. I can’t even put it into words how happy I am.”
Now with her first win at the big event under her belt, her thoughts and feelings must be euphoric and sobering at the same time as she looks ahead to her next opponent.
In a release, the Guyana tennis association stated it would like to congratulation Ms. Vickery on her first US Open Main Draw victory and wish every success in her forth coming matches and future endeavors.
