The body of Shevon Anthony, who went missing on Tuesday after a boat mishap in the Kaituma River, North West District, in the vicinity of the mouth of the Sebai Creek, was found floating some distance from where the accident occurred.
The 20-year-old’s body was discovered by a search party a few hours after the boat accident from which six passengers survived.
According to information received, the boat departed Port Kaituma, Region One at around 03:30pm on Tuesday with seven persons on board, including the boat captain. The intended destination was Mabaruma.
However, just after passing the mouth of the Sebai Creek, the boat reportedly collided with a floating log and almost turned turtle in the thick vegetation alongside the river.
After the accident, six of the seven persons remained in the damaged boat which was stuck between the bushes but Anthony wasn’t that lucky. She fell out of the boat and it was only after the survivors regained consciousness that they realized that the mother of two was missing.
Police in a statement said that around 11:00am yesterday, the body of Shevon Anthony was recovered in the Kaituma River and was taken to the Port Kaituma Mortuary.
Meanwhile, those who survived the ordeal are Bernadeen O’Neil, 15, Kavita Anthony, 12, Sunita Debideen, 20, the dead woman’s sister, Dianne Anthony, 25, Troy Caravaio, 22, and the boat captain, Leroy Caravaio.
Yesterday, at the Georgetown Public Hospital, Dianne Anthony told Kaieteur News that it was raining heavily and she and the other passengers were forced to cover themselves with a tarpaulin to avoid getting wet.
“All of us were covered with the plastic. Shevon was at the end and I was next to her. None of us know what really happened but the captain told us that he collided with a piece of wood and he fell down in the boat and that was when the boat ended up in the bushes,” Dianne Anthony stressed.
She explained that all the passengers lost consciousness. “When I wake up, I see a lot of blood everywhere and everybody was lying in the damage boat. The boat lean on one side and when I look then I see Shevon missing.”
None of the survivors received life-threatening injuries, although five of them were hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for observation.
