Police were on the hunt for two armed bandits who last night shot the driver of a prominent South Ruimveldt supermarket, before escaping with over $400,000 in cash.
Up to late last evening, doctors at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) were operating on 63-year-old Alfred ‘Freddie’ Fernandes, who was reportedly shot in his abdomen.
Fernandes is a long-time worker at the popular Johnny P Supermarket on Aubrey Barker Street.
According to neighbours and workers at the supermarket, the incident is not the first one to have occurred there.
The bandits, who were dressed in dark clothing, are believed to have been staking out the place for the while. Neighbours recalled that there was a strange man lurking in the area earlier on.
The supermarket is housed on the bottom flat of a two storey building and Fernandes was reportedly heading upstairs, through a side door, when the bandits struck. The business had just closed its doors for the evening.
The bandits are believed to have scaled a side fence and waited in the dark for the door to open, before pouncing. They did not ask any questions and reportedly shot Fernandes before grabbing a bag.
Persons said they heard a shot and saw two men running from a yard next to the supermarket.
They entered into what appeared to be a yellow taxi. Persons saw one of the men removing the back number plate, shortly before they vehicle pulled off.
The men were said to be armed with what appeared to be a revolver.
A senior official of the supermarket disclosed that it is not normal that the supermarket would have that much cash lying around so late.
In May 2008, the supermarket’s owner, Johnny Pires was robbed of a significant amount of cash and a firearm during a similar, late evening attack.
