The rehabilitation to beautify the site of the 1763 monument is underway. Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony said that restoration works have been completed to several sections of the historic site.
Minister Anthony outlined that the rehabilitation works for 2013 have been completed. These works include the completion of the information centre, a security hut, sanitary facilities and the rehabilitation of the fountain as well as installation of a new pump and construction of new park benches.
Other maintenance works include landscaping the monument gardens, replacement of picket fences and ropes and the fountain.
However the installation of lights to the monument is expected to be accomplished shortly.
Dr. Anthony was responding to a question posed by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Parliamentarian, Christopher Jones, during a recent sitting of the National Assembly.
Jones made reference to the Minister’s budgetary 2012 Speech, where he had promised that the administration will “complete the rehabilitation of the 1763 Monument, the restoration of the fountain and lights to enhance the beauty of the site.”
The opposition Member of Parliament questioned whether the site will be completed to coincide with the monument’s 250th anniversary of the Berbice Slave Rebellion.
This year mark’s that high point, as history records back in 1763, about 2,500 slaves revolted against colony regime in Magdalenenburg Plantation, Upper Canje River, Berbice.
The uprising was led by native West African slave “Cuffy” who died later that same year but is still remembered as a National Hero.
This caused the 1976 creation of the impressive 15 feet, two and half ton, monument which was erected by celebrated local artist Dr. Philip Alphonso Moore (now deceased).
The statue was unveiled on May23, 1976 by Guyana’s Prime Minister Linden Forbes Burnham.
The 1763 Monument is a symbol of struggle and freedom for many. The site continues to attract tourists and locals alike. In recent years, the location of the 1763 monument has become a popular scene for newlyweds to capture their first moments as married couples.
