East Bank Champions of the Digicel Schools Football Championship (DSFC), Covent Garden Secondary School, added another accolade to their 2013 collection when they defeated East Cost champions Bladen Hall 2-0 to win the Region 4 crown at the BV Community Centre Ground yesterday afternoon.
Goals either side of play paved the way for Covent Garden’s win in a game that which could have gone the other way had Bladen Hall, with some luck and their Coach who was absent, been much more purposeful.
As it turned out, Covent Garden did enough to lift the Region 4 crown and were duly rewarded with one set of uniforms, gold medals and a trophy by tournament sponsor, Digicel.
The game started with the East Coast team taking the early charge to the host team and on the stroke of five minutes were rewarded with their first goal. It came from an enterprising run half way into the Bladen Hall half, a high pass collected by Sheldon Chapman who worked his way past two defenders before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Rawle Success at the near post even as Denzil Junior tried to curtail Chapman’s surge to goal.
Covent Garden can count themselves lucky as they went into a long period of sluggishness after taking the lead. Bladen Hall lacked cohesiveness in midfield as well as in the forward line which resulted in them not being able to pounce upon the chances that came their way.
A tower of strength in defence for Covent Garden however, was their Captain Trevor Jones who had to work overtime as he did in the East Bank final against Institute of Professional Education.
Bladen Hall tried for all their worth but just couldn’t come up with the antidote to hit the back of the nets. Even in the second period of play, the East Coast side tried their best but it was just not good enough.
As the minutes ticked away, Covent Garden put the game beyond the reach of Bladen Hall when midfielder Kesta Joseph beat Success again at the near post in the 84th minute. The goal clearly knocked the wind out of the sails of Bladen Hall and carried Covent Garden to the Region 4 championship, the first time they have won at this level.
Bygeval Multilateral, who were knocked out early this year, won in the first two years of the competition.
Digicel representative at the game yesterday, Devon Dooker, presented silver medals and a trophy to Bladen Hall for their efforts while gold medals, a trophy and a complete set of uniforms were handed over to Covent Garden’s Captain Trevor Jones by Dooker.
The new champions have now advanced to the quarterfinals and will come up against West Demerara champions Leonora Secondary on Wednesday at a venue to be confirmed.
