Recognizing the need for the Guyana Fire Service to be fully equipped to fulfill its mandate in protecting life and property from the destruction of fire, provisions were made to supply the service with additional water tankers during the considerations of the 2012 budget.
Following the training provided by a French delegation of fire fighters from the French Guiana Fire Service on Friday, Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, handed over two water tankers to the Guyana Fire Service.
According to Fire Chief Marlon Gentle, the tankers, which only recently arrived in Guyana, are capable of holding almost seven times the amount of water the standard water tender holds.
The Home Affairs Minister had expressed concern that there have been repeated reports by the local media, of fire tenders arriving on fire scenes without water in the tanks, something which he deemed as being “virtually impossible”.
The Fire Chief, replicating the Minister, said that fire tenders cannot arrive at a scene without water since checks to the tank and hoses are among the first tasks that are carried out by a fire fighter on duty.
He added it is likely that the fire tender “ran out of water rather than arriving at a fire scene looking for water.
The Fire Chief explained that the standard tankers currently have the capacity to hold 400 gallons of water while the mechanism that pumps the water out of the tanker has the capacity of pumping 500 gallons of water per minute.
Hence, the water contained in the standard tenders would be completely drained after one minute, affording the tender no option than to seek alternative sources of water.
With the increased capacity to hold water, Fire Chief believes that the two 3000 gallon tankers will afford fire fighters with” a longer fighting capacity”.
