Despite a minor setback on day one of this year’s edition of the annual Bartica Regatta Powerboat Racing and Jet Ski competition, due to rain and unusual high winds, the activity turned out to be a resounding success, attracting the usual bumper crowds.
When the final race was concluded and the waters returned to calmness, emerging as the overall winner in the big boy’s category (Unlimited) was Dave Scott piloting ‘Jaguar’, Jose Jardine aboard Flash ruled the roost in the B-Class, while Dave Young bettered his rivals in the C and D-Class categories. The leading Jet Skier turned out to be Whitney ‘Don King’ Welcome.
Even though the Belle brothers and their siblings did not participate this year in honour of the late Monty Belle who died in a freak accident at the Lake Mainstay Regatta on August 12, 2012 during a race, the races were still competitive and exciting.
While they did not compete, the brothers and their siblings were in attendance as spectators.
Dave Scott won the first event of this year’s activity for 200HP to Unlimited over 5 Laps. Scott, piloting ‘Jaguar’, took the checkered flag comfortably ahead of rival Neil Gonsalves of the Pomeroon in charge of ‘Czyie Boy 2’ and Raymond Rasul aboard ‘Lashback’.
Scott was again in the driver’s seat on day two when he powered to victory in the 225 – Unlimited 4-Lap showdown, this time he won from Jose Jardine ‘Flash’ and Dave Young piloting 3:16 Monster.
He again achieved the top podium spot in another Unlimited contest, relegating Selwyn Joseph aboard ‘The Girl Sugar’ to the number two position with third place occupied by Dave Young.
Jardine won the second event on day one, 200HP over 5-laps in charge of his boat named Hokinson Mining, Raymond Rasul ‘Flashback’ placed third. Piloting ‘Flash’ on day two, Jardine won another 200HP contest this time over 4-laps, again Rasul had to settle for the runner-up spot.
The event that was run off in honour of Monty Belle, a 75HP race, saw Jardine coming out victor ahead of Dave Young ‘3:16 Monster’.
Dave Young’s performance this year turned out to be his best ever as he not only won a number of races but competed in 9 events copping three first places. Whitney Welcome again ruled the roost among the Jet Skiers.
