“I see blood running down and I thought his head burst so I take off my shirt to wrap his head but when I raise he up, his eye ball drop and left hanging by his cheeks….” -victim’s son
A 43-year old Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara resident lost his left eye last Saturday night after another villager beat him unconscious and then used a knife to gouge his eye out.
The victim, Dave Seecharan, of Lot 1708 Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, has been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Police have detained the suspect, his wife and the couple’s 17-year-old son.
Kaieteur News understands that Seecharan had intervened in a fight between his son and a son of the suspect’s. Both boys are aged 17.
The two youths reportedly had a previous dispute that resulted in them being placed on a bond.
According to the man’s daughter, Navita, her father had left his home on Saturday night to accompany his 17-year-old son home from a workplace in the community.
“My brother does finish work at 8 o’clock so every night my father would go and collect him from the Public Road and bring him home,” the victim’s daughter said.
She added that based on what she heard, her father and brother were walking home when another teen, who had some old grievances with her 17-year-old brother, confronted him on the road and the two tussled.
The son, who also spoke to Kaieteur News, alleged that he and the teen had some “gang” problems a few months ago which resulted in them being sent to court and being placed on a six-month bond.
According to the son, the other teenager attacked him from behind.
He said that after the youth ‘chucked’ him, his father intervened and also ‘chucked’ the suspect. The teen said that his parents then accompanied them to a police station.
The victim’s daughter said that her mother was taking her husband and son to the Beterverwagting Police Station when the suspect attacked.
“My mother was in front running to reach the station and my father was at the back when I see the boy mother, father and some other people coming towards us,” the 17-year-old claimed.
He added that the suspect’s father attempted to strike him with a length of wood but his father took the blow, which rendered him unconscious.
“After they try to hit me I run away but when I turn around and see they weren’t following me, I turn back and I see my father fall down and they had the knife,” the victim’s son claimed.
He added that when his father’s attacker walked away he ran towards his father, “I see blood running down and I thought his head burst so I take off my shirt to wrap his head but when I raise he up, his eye ball drop and left hanging by his cheeks.”
Seecharan was rushed to the GPHC but was told by doctors that nothing could have been done to save his eye.
Seecharan’s attacker along with his spouse and son were subsequently detained.
