Wanted man Ramdhanie Persaud, called ‘Prakash’ or ‘Prack’, 46, of 1071 New Area Canefield, East Canje
who was wanted by the police for murder, is in police custody.
The man, a Guyana-born US citizen, gave himself up around 15:30 hrs on Wednesday at the Central Police Station. He was in the company of his lawyer, Mursulene Bacchus. He is expected to be charged shortly.
Persaud is suspected to have shot Bibi Shameena Deen, his reputed wife of over 27 years, on Tuesday March 20, at their home in East Canje during a dispute. The shooting occurred around 23:00 hours after Persaud allegedly went home in a drunken state.
The woman who operated a shop at their home was found with bullet wounds to the head and chest.
Persaud reportedly fled the home while the victim’s 13 year old son was attempting to summon help after hearing his mother’s screams. The couple has two sons, aged 13 and 16.
According to a source, the man is denying that he was involved in any shooting incident, much less to kill his wife. He stated that he was not around at the time of the incident.
He stated that he was away all day at his farm and when he came home during the night he heard that his wife had died and people saying that it was he who killed his wife.
He became afraid and ran away and hid in the bushes.
The suspect’s family members who reside overseas had called the woman’s relatives to give their condolences.
According to information, the man after committing the act, fled to the backlands where he was hiding out. Police are in possession of Persaud’s US passport.
The couple’s teenage son, who was at home when the brutal killing occurred, had heard her cries for help at around 23:00 hours but found the bedroom locked when he tried to go to his mother’s assistance.
The lad then telephoned and informed them of what took place. But, by the time relatives and neighbours arrived on the scene, the suspect had fled. Her relatives found her lying face-down in a large pool of blood in the bedroom.
A post mortem revealed that she was shot at close range in the head and chest. Initial reports had stated that she was stabbed. The cause of death was given as shock and haemorrhage due to gunshot injuries, laceration to the brain and a fractured skull.
The man who lives in the United States would return home on a regular basis. He returned to Guyana in January and was expected to leave in April. The couple’s relationship is said to have been a turbulent one. Two months ago, Persaud was placed on a one-year bond, after he was charged with assaulting his wife.
