GUYANA’S senior cricket coach Esuan Crandon says his players are ready to face the formidable Jamaica outfit in the semi-final match of the West Indies Cricket Board four-day tournament at Sabina Park, starting tomorrow.
The bulk of the Guyana squad arrived at the Norman Manley International Airport Tuesday and Crandon told the Jamaica Observer his team has the right balance of youth and experience to pose problems for the four-time defending champions.
“I think our guys are ready for the challenge and we aim to play better than Jamaica in each and every department.
“We have a fairly young team, but we have the experienced Shivnarine Chanderpaul in our squad and the likes of (Narsingh) Deonarine, (Assad) Fudadin and Leon Johnson have done very well,” he said.
The veteran left-hander Chanderpaul and ace leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo were scheduled to arrive yesterday.
The 28-year-old left-hander Deonarine, who has played at the highest level for the West Indies, is the competition’s leading run-scorer with 547. He has hit six half-centuries in 11 innings and averages 49.72.
Fudadin, 26, has been criticised for underperforming, but this season he has been consistent, stroking two centuries at 53.80 per innings. He has amassed 538 runs.
In the bowling department, Guyana will look to left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, pacer Brandon Bess and Bishoo.
Guyana finished fourth in the preliminary phase with 39 points after three wins, two losses and a draw in six matches.
One of the losses was against the table-topping Jamaicans in Antigua, and the Guyana management is aware it will not be an easy task to get the better of a disciplined unit chasing a record fifth straight four-day title.
Said Crandon; “Jamaica is a very good team and I’m expecting a tough match. They have won all their games outright and that tells a story of what to expect from them.”
