There was keen competition on the first day of the Western Union branded Hikers Hockey Junior Team, indoor junior tournament at the National Gymnasium.
In the Western Union Sponsored Under 13 Category forty one under 13 players from six teams tested their skills against each other in what was one of the more entertaining displays of young talent. Although all the teams started tentatively it was not long before the Marian Academy ‘A’ goal scoring machine warmed up and stamped their authority on the day’s proceedings.
They ended the group stage with the maximum of 15 points from five matches, scoring 15 goals while only conceding 5. They beat Hikers 3-2 in the semifinal and then claimed the title 1-0 against last year’s Under 13 Champions Old Fort. GCC and Hikers tied at full time in the third place play-off and went to penalty strokes with Akeem Mc Donald giving Hikers the 2-1 win. Saints defeated Marian Academy ‘B’ in the 5th place play-off with a 1-0 win.
The James Service Centre sponsored Under 16 tournament was a more evenly contested affair with six teams from four clubs trying to outwit each other. At the end of it all it was the GCC Girls and the Hikers Boys who retained their respective titles.
In the Under 16 Girls competition the GCC girls showed why they are one of the most dominant regional female teams with a clinical display, scoring a total of seventeen goals to capture first place over the fast improving Hikers and St. Stanislaus College girls’ teams, respectively.
The Under 16 Boys on the other hand had two groups of three teams fielded from four clubs with Old Fort fielding three teams. GCC and Hikers played undefeated in the group stage and through the knock out stages to reach the finals where Hikers took the top spot with a come from behind, 3-2 victory. Old Fort ‘A’ defeated a defiant St. Stanislaus College team 2-1 in the third place play-off, while Old Fort B defeated Old Fort C 2-0 to take fifth place.
The action continued yesterday with the Global Technology Schools Tournament and followed by the Woodpecker Products Under 21 categories.
