– after beating St. Kitts, Antigua select
Adding an All-American point guard to the local female basketball team proved how important it is to have a premier ball-handler in the team with the national ladies easing to the final of the 12th Annual Gillian Brazier Basketball Shoot-Out in Antigua.
Guyana played CPTSA Wings in the final last night after comfortably dismissing Antigua Select and Combined team 51-36 in semi-final Saturday night to remain unbeaten. Guyana had defeated St. Kitts and Nevis 63-56 Friday night and Wings in the first round.
The national female team had secured the services of college star, Shauntelle Nelson for the tour, and though Nelson has restricted herself from taking full control of the offense, reports out of the island indicates that her ball distribution skills was at its best.
In Saturday night’s game against Antigua’s Select, Nyota Peters scored 11 points and grabbed an impressive seven rebounds to continue to be a major force in the centre for Guyana. Jess St. John had 16 points and 16 rebounds for the opposing Antiguan side.
On Friday night, in a reportedly hard fought and physical encounter, Guyana took the lead in the final quarter and went on to trounce St. Kitts. Veteran forward, Nicola Jacobs had the ‘big game’ for Guyana, putting up 26 points and grabbing 18 rebounds while Natasha Alder scored 12 points and raked in 19 rebounds. Peters had six points in this encounter.
For St. Kitts, Alicia Wigley scored 15 points, Jamila Morton 13 points while Pamela Huggins 12 points rounded off the top scorers. Reports reaching Kaieteur Sport indicate that Nicole Edwards was a difficult offensive force for the St. Kitts against Guyana.
Edwards scored several coast-to-coast points, making 9 of 11 free-throws, but nippy guard, Sonia Rodney sparked an offensive revival for the Guyanese late in the game. In the preliminary round Thursday night, CPTSA Wings had let a 10-point lead slip away in the last four minutes of the game to give the Kittians the win, and on the previous night, Wednesday, had done the same with a 12-point lead against Guyana.
However, in the title round of the competition, Amanda Edwards dropped 27 points that turn the tide on St. Kitts and helped Wings reach the final against Guyana. (Edison Jefford)
