– Founding members, former GHB President, sponsors among those recognised
In a glitzy ceremony that epitomized the high standard that the club usually exhibits on the field of play, Hikers Hockey Club honoured its founding members, sponsors and former Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) President Chris Fernandes during its inaugural Awards Dinner and Presentation ceremony on Monday evening in the Savannah Suite, at the Pegasus Hotel.
Attended also by club members, well wishers, GHB officials and fans of the fraternity, founding members Troy Peters and the late former national captain Andy Gouveia were among those recognised for their contribution to the Club during the ceremony attended by players, hockey officials and sponsors.
Peters and Gouveia were instrumental in establishing the team over 15 years ago and their contributions according to President of the club Devin Munroe must be appreciated and rewarded.
Fernandes, who it was reported as being perhaps the key figure in sustaining the sport for a number of years, having formed the St. Stanislaus College team, before transferring them to the Georgetown Cricket Club was also honoured for his significant contribution to the game.
Peters in brief remarks expressed gratitude to the Club, noting that the Hikers team has made significant strides over the years and its junior development programme should be emulated by other clubs and sporting bodies locally.
“While we reminisce on the past we must also recognise those players who have, stayed on to ensure the legacy continues and I am heartened by the steps taken to honour not only club members, but other key stakeholders,” Peters a former President of the GHB said.
Also receiving plaques were main sponsors Demerara Distillers Ltd., Western Union, Global Technology, Woodpecker Products and Scotia Bank.
St. Stanislaus College and Everest Cricket Club were also recognised for making their facilities available to the Club.
Vice President Rene Edwards, who gave the audience an epigrammatic outline of the club’s activities over the past year and current plans, also informed that three members of the club who benefitted from hockey scholarships awarded at the London Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom have excelled academically and they include Marvin Dannett, Janela Munroe and Chantelle Fernandes.
Special mention was also extended to Leroy Jack, Michael Harding, Travon Younge, Renee James, Devon Scott, Rayon Branford and Shaquille Assannah for their success at CSEC Examinations.
Also recognized were members Jerozeno Bell, Timothy McIntosh, Triston Gomes, Marc King and Robert Fernandes, all former national players.
Sports Journalist Rawle Welch was also identified for his coverage of hockey.
