Although not officially opened, the newly built North Ruimveldt
Police Outpost is already serving its purpose.
Since January 19, last, ranks commenced occupation of the facility which is situated at the head of the North Ruimveldt Last Entrance and already several persons within the community have felt the impact of the initiative to put the facility there.
To date, nine persons have been arrested for various offenses ranging from Domestic violence to possession of narcotics.
Kaieteur News understands that five out of the nine persons have already been placed before the court.
The facility was conceptualized to deal with reports of rising crime in the area. This publication understands that before time, in the event of a crime in the Upper North Ruimveldt area, police from the East La Penitence Police Station several miles away had to be summoned.
But by the time they arrived at the scene, the suspect or suspects would have already vanished due to the long duration of time the officers had to travel.
At present, the station is manned by several ranks who work on a shift system.
It is equipped with two cells which cater for six prisoners each. It includes a small kitchen and has a television set, a laptop computer and all other items a station requires.
The outpost mainly serves as a police station. It caters for every aspect when it comes to policing, such as, CID, Inquires and Traffic issues.
Yesterday, this publication visited the police outpost and was told that “everything was quiet.”
