Leon Belony shook off the disappointment of losing a closely contested battle against National Scrabble champion, Abigail McDonald at the just concluded National Open Scrabble championships, to capture the honours when the Guyana Association of Scrabble players (GASP) hosted an open-two tier competition at Playland Exquisite Italian Restaurant, Enterprise E.C.D, Sunday November 20 last.
In the senior category comprising the top ten rated players, Belony amassed 6 points with a positive spread of 872 to relegate Moen Gafoor (4 points and a positive spread of 455) to second place while Orlando Michael scored 4 games and a positive spread of 105 to complete the podium spots. This category attracted such players as Orlando Michael, Ulric Harris, Leon Belony, Grace Hercules and Moen Gafoor among others.
Prudence Edwards won 5 games with a positive 738 to take the honours in the 2nd tier. Devraj Deonarine also won 5 games but amassed a smaller positive spread of 325 to take the second place spot while the 3rd place finisher was Devon Dublin with 4 games and a positive spread of 26. The respective winners received trophies complements of Playland Exquisite Italian Restaurant and Mr. Gafoor expressed deep gratitude to proprietor of that entity, Mr. Shankar, on behalf of GASP.
The GASP representative also acknowledged the proprietor’s hospitality coupled with his continued support for the sport. This competition is indicative of the efforts of the GASP executive to extend the sport across the country and marks the second of its kind. Mr. Gafoor also indicated that GASP is aspiring to make it an annual event.
