Red Threat staged a picketing exercise yesterday afternoon in the vicinity of the Police Mobile Outpost opposite the Stabroek Market.
The protesters were calling upon the Government and other political parties to make domestic violence a part of their election campaign strategy. However these women have got no comment from any of these parties so far.
This event was one of the many that were held in Georgetown by the said Organization on the same issue. Names of women and children who were abused and killed by the men in their respective families were plastered on posters. These included the names of the latest murder of the Blanchard children.
A representative from Red Thread told this newspaper that the organization has been getting tremendous support from the members of the public who took the time to write down their thoughts and opinions on women and children being abused in their homes.
The women have those comments posted on a fabric wall to motivate others to come forward and share their thoughts.
Kaieteur News got comments from a few men in the area who, while in support of the fight against domestic violence, said that the whole act has got so serious that innocent men are being jailed even if women lie about being abused.
“I say shamefully that I was being abused by my wife, sexually, emotionally and physically, and y’all might think is joke and laugh at me like the Police at Timehri Police Station. But is true” said Michael McKenzie.
As far as the law for not beating your children is concerned, many were against it as they believe some children need to be taught a good lesson.
“People should come on this park and see how lawless them young people getting on. I gon beat me daughter bad if I see she behaving like that,” noted one woman.
Many argued that children will now hide behind these laws and do bad things, adding that it is not fair that parents cannot discipline their children the way they want to and then when they do wrong things parents are the ones who will have to face the law.
The majority of parents expressed that they believe that talking to some children don’t help until you whip them and then “talk” to them about another whipping if they repeat the mistake.
One man noted that while these laws are very important and protect the lives of many, they should be modified so as to be fair.
The women from Red Thread say that they have already taken all the negative comments into consideration and will try to conduct other protests so as to call upon the relevant authorities to modify some of these laws that prove to be a problem to some.
