..as Nat’l Schools Garden Competition concludes
The National Schools Garden Competition concluded yesterday at Leonora Secondary, after its launching six weeks ago, with the announcement of the regional and national winners for Nursery, Primary, and Secondary schools.
The majority of the audience displayed the green and white uniform, a signature of Leonora Secondary School, and shook the room with thunderous applause when they were declared the national winners and victors for Region Three. In addition, Leonora Primary won in its category for Region three and nationals.
Pine Street Nursery captured the regional and national award, and delighted the crowd when a shy little student thanked everyone on behalf of his school.
Winner for the Georgetown region was Bel Air Primary whose calypso rendition sent a message to the girls in the audience that “boys and books don’t mix.”
Winners of the different regions consisted of Region Two – Aurora Secondary, Diamond Secondary – Region Four, Bush Lot Secondary – Region Five and Durban Backlands – Georgetown.
To begin the competition the various schools gathered at Diamond Secondary on September 9, where the rules and regulations were ‘planted’ for everyone to understand. The judges visited the gardens with a rubric out of 50, it was later mentioned that Leonora Secondary scored 47 out of 50.
The competition was funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) whose representative of the country Dr. Lystra Fletcher-Paul gave a speech stressing the importance of planting edible crops because of the ongoing food crisis in the world today.
As food prices increase, salaries stay the same or in some cases decrease showing the necessity of growing one’s food instead of being dependent on buying from other sources, Dr. Fletcher-Paul asserted. She thanked the Ministry of Agriculture for their vision in running the Grow More Food Campaign and emphasised to teachers to no longer make children go to the garden as a punishment, but to make it as important and enjoyable as the other subjects.
The FAO approved a Telefood Project of G$ 1.9 Million to supply Agricultural Tools and Equipment to 20 Secondary and Post Secondary institutions in all 10 regions of Guyana, according to Dr. Fletcher-Paul.
Rohit Singh, Coastal Coordinator Extension Services – NAREI Ministry of Agriculture stated that, Agricultural Science is at the forefront of technology and “up there with Rocket Science.” He also added that based on reports he was not surprised that Leonora Secondary and Primary would win both regionally and nationally.
