8th Busta Champion of Champions final
Another fine performance from Berbice all-rounder Rajiv Ivan led his team Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets (RHTG&G) to an easy 35 run win over arch rivals Port Mourant Karibee Rice at the Area ‘H’ Ground and their 7th hold on to the Annual Busta Champion of Champions Title.
Batting first after losing the toss, Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets was given a 24 run opening partnership before Hicks was run out for 12; Rikhi following in the next over caught at cover point for 9 by Bisham Deolall off Shameer Khan to leave the home team on 24-2 in the 6th over.
The experienced duo of former National Under-19 player Renwick Batson and Khemraj Mahadeo added 39 for the next wicket before the inform Mahadeo was bowled by veteran off spinner Andre Percival for 21 at 69-3 in the 13th over.
Batson and Rajiv Ivan batted smartly to add 26 for the 4th wicket before Ivan was caught off Andre Percival for 19. Batson was run out for a well played 28 (1×6 2×4). Dedicated batting from Jason Sinclair 25 (3×4) and Loyydel Lewis 12 enable RHTG&G to reach a competitive 164 all out off their allotted 35 overs. Bowling for Port Mourant, Andre Percival had bowling figures of 2-28 and Devindra Thakurdeen 2-38.
Needing to score 165 off 35 overs to secure their second Busta title, the visitors lost opener Mahendra Veerasammy bowled by Clinton Pestano for 1 at 16 for 1 in the 3rd over. Opener Devindra Thakurdeen and the burly Tony Mc Kenzie then gave the visitors some hope by adding 37 in 8.3 overs before Mc Kenzie was bowled by off spinner Eon Hooper who continues to impress everyone with his flight and turn.
Port Mourant inform batsman Shastri Persaud was then brilliantly caught one handed at short mid wicket off the bowling of Skipper Shawn Pereira at 54 for 4. The attractive looking Thakurdeen was then bowled through his defence by leg spinner Shawn Pereira for 23 (2×4). The Port Mourant Karibee Rice batsmen were never allowed to break free owing to some disciplined bowling by the RHTG&G bowlers.
Shameer Khan’s 20, Andre Percival’s 16 and C. Arjune’s 15 added a bit of pride to the visitors’ final score of 129 all out in 32.3 overs. Bowling for the home team Hooper led with 3 for 12; Rajiv Ivan 3 for 35 and Shawn Pereira 2 for 22. There was one wicket each for Pestano and off spinner Loyydel Lewis.
At the Presentation, Secretary/CEO of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, Hilbert Foster said that the tournament as a resounding success and it continues to play a major role in the development of cricket in Berbice.
Foster praised the Guyana Beverage Inc. for its continued committed investment in Berbice cricket and for the role they are playing in the development of cricket across Guyana.
He noted that this year’s edition saw several players performing well with both the bat and ball including Rajiv Ivan, Eon Hooper, Royston Crandon and Devendra Thakurdeen among others. Managing Director of the Guyana Beverage Inc. Mr. Robert Selman expressed pleasure at the successful hosting of another Busta Champion of Champions tournament by the RHTY&SC and stated quite proudly that of all the tournaments sponsored by Busta, the Berbice tournament has always been the gem of the company’s throne due to proper organizational planning and hard by the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club. Mr. Selman pledged that the sponsorship in Berbice would continue next year and called on the other Cricket Board’s to emulate the work ethics of the RHTY&SC.
The champion club received $80,000 and the beautiful championship trophy; Port Mourant Karibee Rice collected $50,000 and the runner-up trophy while Ivan was presented with $10,000 and a trophy for being named Man-of-the-Finals.
Thakurdeen and Ivan received special gifts for scoring the most runs and taking the most wickets respectively. Captain of the Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets Shawn Pereira said that victory was achieved as a result of team unity while also dedicating the win to Mr. Ravi Mangar of Gizmos & Gadgets, the team sponsor.
The tournament was organised by the Cricket Development Committee of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and sponsored by the Guyana Beverage Inc.
