Under the theme ‘Teachers for Gender Equality’, Guyana will be joining over 100 countries on October 5 to celebrate World Teachers’ Day 2011 in acknowledging the efforts of teachers in an increasingly complex, multicultural and technological society.
Coretta McDonald, General Secretary of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU), explained that the GTU recognizes the important role which teachers play in the education system and as such, the union will be honoring 45 of them throughout Guyana on this year’s World Teachers’ Day.
She stated that these individuals have made extremely outstanding contributions to the education system and trade unionism and as a result it is only fitting to publicly acknowledge this and recognize these special teachers.
Two presentation ceremonies will be conducted on October 5.
The first ceremony will begin at 10:00hrs at the Georgetown Club, Camp Street, while the second ceremony commences at 14:00hrs at the GTU’s Headquarters, Woolford Avenue, Georgetown.
Major sponsors for these ceremonies are the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company, DIGICEL (Guyana), Courtney Benn Construction, Scotia Bank, WaterCris, Wireless Connections, Steve’s Jewellery and Mahendra Persaud.
The list of teachers who are currently in the system that will be honoured at these ceremonies are: Lucy Wilson and Brentnol Ashley of Region One; Roger Joseph, Sooknarine Kanhai and Sandra Doorga of Region Two; Margaret Smith and Julian Cambridge of Region Three; Wendy Doris and Vereen Bryan of East Bank Demerara, Region Four; Holly Blackman and Giddel Austin of East Coast Demerara, Region Four; Roshana Gillis, Meryl English and Keith Bynoe of Region Five; Leon Henry, Armin Dean and Natalie Corlette of Region Six; Carmel Williams of Region Seven; Mayfield Trim, Cleaveland Thomas and Wanda Richmond of Region 10.
For Georgetown, there will be Charles Gillis, Audrey Sue, Christopher Gaskin and Jennifer Cumberbatch.
Meanwhile, the list of outstanding retirees who will also be honoured this year includes:Gertude Dolphin, 104-years old, Violet Rodrigues, 84, Elaine Cruickshank, Jean Patterson, Samuel Archer, Harold Carryl, Linden Smith, Winifred Haywood, Avril Crawford, Yvette Herod, Busta Wright, Gertude James, Vida Daonarine, Statia Phillips and Phillip Roberts.
According to McDonald, Guyana has been celebrating this worldwide event since 1994. However, this year is the first in which the country will be celebrating it in such a big way.
