Opposition absent as National Assembly holds last sitting
Government yesterday hailed the ninth Parliament a success, when the last sitting concluded yesterday with the opposition parties holding true to their promise to stay away from the National Assembly.
But the absence failed to deter the government side from listing the successes of the sittings.
It will be recalled that People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) side had passed a motion to work through Parliament’s two months recess, citing a number of outstanding critical bills that needed attention.
However, the People’s National Congress Reform and Alliance For Change both refused to attend saying that PPP/C had enough time to conduct its business.
GAP/ROAR’s Member of Parliament, Everall Franklin, was suffering from medical issues so it was the entire opposition that has been absent since the sittings resumed in the recess period.
PPP/C MPs shortly after the Ninth Parliament held its last sitting yesterday. The opposition parties were again absent.
The life of Parliament constitutionally comes to an end on Wednesday, September 28.
According to PPP/C MP, Gail Teixeira, the entire National Assembly deserves kudos for work done with 140 bills enacted. These cover areas including Finance, Judiciary, Social and Production, among others. Critical bills including the Access To Information, the Telecommunications Bill and the Broadcast Bill were among those that were laid in the National Assembly.
She noted that the work of Parliament, compared to other territories, was “reasonably” completed, and issues like annual reports from the Ministries and other state agencies were regularly making their way to be tabled, a clear indication of the leaps and bounds in which Parliament and its works have grown.
Alongside this, the PPP/C MP asserted, is the actual growth within Parliament’s administration which included the establishment of a Facebook account and the fact of increased transparency where media and the public were allowed more access to proceedings.
But Teixeira did not pass on the opportunity to blaze the opposition for being absent, noting it was a sad indictment on them. The MP was confident that the public were intelligent enough to see through the “shenanigans” of the opposition.
In a parting shot, Teixeira said she looked forward to seeing the opposition in their “opposition chairs” when the new Parliament convenes, after the elections.
