A family from Enmore, East Coast Demerara is thankful to be alive after five armed men invaded their home and business. According to reports, the gunmen attacked ‘Browns’ grocery store at around 19:30 hours on Wednesday.
The police in a press release stated that businessman Karranchand Itwaru, 48, his wife Cindy, 40, son Trevor Itwaru and employee Leon Wickham, were attacked and robbed by five men, two of whom were armed with handguns.
A source close to the family told this publication that the proprietor, his wife and son had already closed the store when the son noticed a car ‘patrolling the street’. The source said just as the family shut the establishment and the employees had left, five men ran into the yard and the proprietor’s son was held at gunpoint. The intruders then found the proprietor in the yard and ordered him and his son upstairs into their house.
“They carry the man and he son upstairs and another man find the watchman and tie he up downstairs,” the source said. This publication was told that once in the house the gunmen ordered the proprietor, his wife and son to lie on the floor. Reports are that the gunmen then tied up the man and his family while demanding that they reveal where the cash and gold jewellery could be found.
The gunmen then helped themselves to a canister of cash and cheques. According to the source shortly after the men got the cash, one of their cell phones rang and they exited the building. There are also reports that the men made off with the day’s sales which totaled some $300,000, US$1300, a quantity of ammunition, gold and diamond jewellery.
The matter has since been reported and investigations are ongoing.
