Saint Margaret’s Primary School, Daniel Scott and Stephan King and New Life Ministries’ Fillip Gomes all of the Pele Football Club, were outstanding performers of this year National Grade Six Assessment. These U-13 footballers are now students of Guyana’s top five high schools.
Stephen King has achieved Queen College, while Daniel Scott attained Saint Stanislaus College as Brazilian-born Fillip Gomes secured Saint Roses High School.
In an interview Thursday at the National Park Football ground with the President of Pele Football Club, Cecil Jacques, Kaieteur Sport was informed that the Pele US Alumni have recognized the three boys performance at their examination and as a result rewarded them with $100 US each to assist with their first academic school year.
Mr. Cecil Jacques added, “This $100 US will go a long way in assisting these three youngsters for their academic year ahead.”
Pele’s President also noted that they will keep track on the youngsters’ performance in their Secondary School years as it will be a great opportunity for them to receive a football scholarship. “This contribution is not only limited to their National Grade Six Assessment and form one achievement as we will track their performance throughout their secondary school with the hope of them getting football scholarships…these are all a part of the partnership we have with our US Alumni,” he said.
He also added, “The presentation was also done to encourage the other young players who are in Primary School preparing to write exams…this shows that we are not only interested in their football development but also in their academic development. This will show to the wider Guyana that football should not be stigmatized as it comprises of intelligent individuals, once we can keep and encourage the players academically and football-wise, Guyana’s football will be heading in the right direction and this is the objective of Pele’s Football Club.”
Daniel Scott informed Kaieteur Sport that the exam was somewhat easier than his mock exams. “It was easier than my mock exams; I studied late and did a lot of homework.”
He also said that his parents were the key motivators for his performance at the exams and hopes to be Technologist in the future.
Scott noted that he has made a lot of scarifies as it pertains to the sport of football and his school work. “The days that I have lesson I will have to forget about training, only in my spare time I will train,” he said.
King said that the exam was not anything major as it was based on grade 4 work. “All I did basically was revision; I went through the previous year’s textbooks and did my homework. I did not take any lesson so there really was not any stress on me…most of my revisions were done in the early morning hours,” he said.
He added, “My motivation came from my teacher and parents, especially my mom.” King said that he would like become a cardiologist as is willing the make the commitment to his school work.
According to Gomes, the examination was challenging. “I studied every night and morning…I found the exam to be a little hard since I am not Guyanese…I do not know the English that well.”
He noted that his parents motivated him with his preparations for the exams and hopes to become a professional football player in the future. (Juanita Hooper)
