Despite calls by the Traffic Chief and National Road Safety Council, there continues to be reckless use of the roadways, resulting in a steadily climbing road fatality figure.
On Sunday night, last, a 49-year-old farmer of Canal Number Two North Section, became the country’s latest victim.
According to reports, the man, Deonauth Seegobin called ‘Cantoract’ who was a well known farmer in the area, was killed almost instantly by a speeding car on the Canal Number Two Public Road. The incident occurred around 22:30 hours, a short distance away from the man’s home.
A close friend of Seegobin, Chandrapaul Ramdan called “Cold beer” told this publication that his friend was walking home when he was struck from behind. He said after Seegobin was hit, the car was driven away, but acting on information received they were able to locate the driver as well as the vehicle.
Kaieteur News understands that the man reportedly died instantly as there was no effort to take him to the hospital.
“This man walks around with a protective helmet all the time, the helmet was crushed to pieces and “Cantoract” was badly damaged as well…imagine when the police reached on the scene all they did was call the hearse,” one eyewitness recounted.
Meanwhile, other persons who witnessed the accident saw the vehicle which was involved in the accident and informed the dead man’s relatives, as well as the police. Reports are that residents and several of Seegobin’s relatives went to the driver’s residence but failed to find him.
They reportedly went to the home of one of his relatives where they claim he appeared to have been “hiding out”.
“When we got there the man saw us and started to drive away…but we eventually caught up with him and by that time the police were part of the chase…but he didn’t resist arrest.”
The driver, who is said to be a fellow villager, was taken into police custody and is assisting with investigation.
Seegobin lived with his brother and was described by many as a very peaceful man. A post mortem examination is expected to be performed on the man’s remains following which charges are likely to be instituted.
Meanwhile, this latest accident has carried the road fatality figure to 77 already for the year as a result of 71 accidents. For the same period last year there were 71 accidents resulting in 75 deaths.
